Coal, soot, and quake

swallowed the land.

Giants

threw their lungs across

the forehead of the sky.

We watched

as they stole our father’s fingers,

our mother’s time.

Our blood pulled taught

to a permanent clothesline,

 we hung our shoes

our earth

our necks

on that thin countenance

on that empty America,

on a three century demise.
